An Interview with Monkey Boy

MONKEY BOY, a minimalist trio from London, have generated a massive buzz on the underground scene since they were formed in '95 by the Warren brothers, Paul (Drums & Vocals), and Mark (Bass).

Their music has been described as an eclectic mixture of heavy bass-driven punk, blues, and something else entirely.

Interview by Amy Mullin

NAME OF BAND:.MONKEY BOY

How long have you guys been together?

Almost 10 years

How did you meet?

Paul (drums and vocals) and Mark (bass) are brothers. We have had various 2nd bassplayers over the years.

What are your musical influences?

We love rock, punk, blues. Into everything from ACDC, Tom Waits and jon lee Hooker to fugazi, The Jesus Lizard, The Dead Kennedy's and Big Black.

How did you come up with your bands name?

No great story, sorry. Just made it up because we needed a name

What are your plans for touring this year?

Going back to Europe as well as doing a UK tour throughout the year

Which band at the moment that has made it big over the last year do you respect the most?

Most of the bands we listen to are not that big really. We get to see loads of great new, young bands on our travels. Can't say we get much time to listen to new acts making it big. One band over the last few years we have a lot of respect for is Muse. Not only did they release their first song on the same record label we are on (lockjaw) but are fantastic at what they do. From being a local band to what they are now commands a lot of respect!

How would you describe your music to people?

Noisy bass driven punk rock I guess.

Which is the best venue you have played at?

Oh, there have been so many great ones. JB's Dudley is pretty impressive.

Explain to us what you do on a 'normal' day?

Get up, have a cup of coffee. Check the email. Maybe do some writing in the afternoon. Watch some movies. Deal with the day to day band stuff.

Can you let us in on any secrets as to what the future holds for your band?

We don't have secrets but I can tell you we have a DVD coming out this year and a new member on the way
